We were driving through Shenandoah National Park on the way to Washington DC and wanted to stop somewhere along the way for Indian food, specifically Kadhi Pakoda, which is surprisingly hard to find on menus. I asked for a list of Indian restaurants nearby that had it on their menu, and Haandi Indian Cuisine came up as one of the only options. Honestly, the review count gave us pause at first (only in the hundreds, not thousands), but there was not much choice given the timing. We later realized that is just because the area is packed with Indian restaurants, not a sign of anything lacking here. Lesson learned for us: do not judge a place purely by review volume. Walking in, the space immediately felt more upscale than we expected, closer to fine dining than a casual spot. The owner, Satnam Singh, and our server greeted us warmly and made sure we felt settled before we even looked at the menu. While placing the order, the owner told us their food is mild by default, and we said that worked for us. We ordered the Palak Patta Chaat, Paneer Tikka, Kadhi Pakoda, Aaloo Gobhi, and some bread on the side, and when the food arrived it was indeed mild, just as promised. That is when we told the owner about a recurring frustration we have with Indian restaurants, curries loaded with salt and spice to the point of causing acid reflux, and how refreshing it was that this was not the case here. It turned out to be some of the best Indian food we have had outside in a while, and it felt just like home cooked food, without much oil, salt, or spices. What really made the night special was Satnam himself. He offered us Gulab Jamun and Kheer on the house, and after dinner we ended up spending another 30 minutes just talking with him, trading stories and family details like old friends. Being Punjabi himself, the conversation had that easy warmth that comes from shared roots. We highly recommend this place to anyone craving genuinely good Indian food, cooked with care and served with real hospitality. And a good reminder for us to not just go by review count when picking a place.
