Getting your US driver's license: state rules & requirements

Can you drive with a foreign passport? Each state has different regulations for newcomers. Check the complete checklist for written and road tests.

Driving rules vary by state, so the documents you needed in New York may differ from Texas or Florida. Always check your state DMV website before booking a test.

Many states let newcomers drive temporarily with a valid foreign license plus passport or an International Driving Permit. The grace period can range from 30 days to one year depending on visa status and residency.

To get a local license you will typically need proof of identity, two proofs of address, your Social Security number or an SSA denial letter, and immigration documents such as an I-94 or green card.

Study the state driver manual in English first, then look for community classes or YouTube explainers in your language. The written test covers signs, right-of-way, and school-zone rules that may differ from your home country.

Schedule the road test only after practicing parallel parking, highway merging, and full stops. Bring the same car you practiced in, arrive early, and keep your foreign license and passport with you until the examiner returns them.
